Killing Internet Radio

If you ever listen to any sort of streaming radio on the Internet -- including one of my favorite sites, Pandora -- please take a moment and go to this site:

In a nutshell, the Recording Industry Association of America convinced the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB), which oversees sound recording royalties paid by Internet radio services, to increase those royalty fees between 300 and 1,200 percent.

Not only that, but the fees are retroactive for 18 months.

The vast majority of Internet radio services will obviously not be able to absorb this sort of cost. So they'll go away.

This isn't piracy. These Internet stations have been adhering to the law and paying licensing fees. But the RIAA wants them out of business. And if this sticks, it'll succeed.

Rage

O'Tim tagged me, kinda, with this Rage thing. What I gathered was, I need to list 20 songs I'd like played on Rage radio. I must confess I didn't know much about Rage Radio, so I looked into it, and from what I can tell it's not a bunch of raging, angry songs, as I had assumed. But what got me interested in this thing was the idea of listing 20 raging, angry songs, so I'm doing it this way anyway because there ain't no meme police on the Internets.

One of the best albums in the history of rock & roll.

Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stones. I'm listening to "Sweet Virginia" right now and I'm about to bust out the chorus full-volume at work. I was tempted to list EOMS as THE best album ever, but I can't go that far because I end up arguing with myself. But without a doubt, it blows away 99.9% of what's been put out ever since. And you better goddamn agree with me.

"Blue 7" by Sonny Rollins from his album Saxophone Colossus

This album was aptly titled, as Sonny Rollins was, and still is, a colossus on the tenor sax. He came onto the bop scene right behind the men credited with inventing this new style of jazz -- Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell -- and recorded and played with all of them. Sonny is still alive and playing today, one of the few remaining true pioneers of jazz from the Blue Note era.

"Daughter" by Vienna Teng from the album Waking Hour

This is one of those songs I'd never have heard were it not for Pandora. I created a Pandora station with just one artist: Tom Waits. After hearing Barcarolle from Tom's album Alice, I've been treated to some eclectic and highly enjoyable piano-based singer/songwriter stuff. Anyway, I like this Vienna Teng tune. She's definitely influenced by the likes of Nora Jones and Tori Amos, so if you like artists of that caliber, check her out.

"Ted, Just Admit It" by Jane's Addiction from the album Nothing's Shocking

Jane's Addiction had a huge impact on the alt-rock scene of the late-80s/early-90s, even though they had only released two studio albums and one live album (until they reformed and released Strays in 2001). Man, these guys could rock. But they imploded because of rampant drug addiction and general freakiness. Fun fact: Lead singer Perry Farrell started Lollapalooza back in 1991. The bands on the inaugural tour were Jane's Addiction, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Living Colour, Nine Inch Nails, Ice T & Body Count, Butthole Surfers, Rollins Band, and Violent Femmes.

"The Bane Rendition" by The Raconteurs from the CD single Steady, As She Goes

The Raconteurs is a new band that most notably features Jack White, formerly of the White Stripes. They wear their 70s rock influences proudly on their sleeves, and they're one of the precious few bands out there today that are keeping real rock and roll alive. A tidbit from Wikipedia: "The Raconteurs were forced to rename themselves as "The Saboteurs" for the Australian market when it was discovered that a Queensland band was already using the name "Raconteurs". The Queensland band refused to give up their name for the amount they were offered, and instead tried to extract a higher price from the Raconteurs' record company." I wonder how much was offered?

"Backwater" by the Meat Puppets from their album Too High to Die.

I had a roommate my freshman year of college who turned me on to the Meat Puppets. They started out as a punk band in the early 80s, then gradually shifted their sound to something more melodic and harmonic. Listening to their library of music, it's easy to forget it's all the same band. They achieved some mainstream fame in the early 90s because Kurt Cobain brought them up on stage to play a few of their songs with Nirvana during the recording of Nirvana: Unplugged. It's somewhat ironic that "Backwater" is the MP tune my shuffling iPod chose, as it was the only charting single of the the Puppets' musical careers.

"Full on Kev's Mom" by Soundgarden, from their Louder than Love album.

Soundgarden was the first of the "grunge" bands (as they became known) I really got to know. I first heard of them through a friend who moved to Seattle. He sent me an EP from C/Z records called Deep Six. This was in 1987, when the most popular music was either cheesy Genesis/Phil Collins pop, or cheesy hair band metal. I listen to Deep Six and I'm both frightened and amazed. It was this mixture of punk, metal and 70s hard rock, and was completely different from anything I'd heard. Other than Soundgarden, other bands on the EP included Green River (which featured musicians who later went on to create Pearl Jam), The Melvins, Skin Yard (whose drummer went on to drum with Soundgarden), and the U-Men. I liked the other bands, but Soundgarden was in a class of its own. They went on to become one of my favorite hard rock bands of all time.

Banging my head.

It's 7:45 a.m. and I'm the only one at my office right now, so I'm cranking System of a Down. For those of you who aren't familar with SOAD, they are, um, loud and heavy. Seriously. There are many of you out there who would probably listen to two bars of an SOAD song and run away screaming.

That's because you're old.

I'm an able-bodied man, without any real noticeable defects (other than that of character). I've no real comprehension as to what life would be like were I to be living it with a disability. I can sympathize, but not empathize.

When the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed nearly 16 years ago, I took a casual notice, thinking, it's probably a good thing that the cripples can get in and out of bathrooms in public places now. Of course, I'm sensitive enough to have only thought it and not spoken it aloud.

This morning, however, the full impact of the A.D.A. hit me when I heard My Humps. There was a time, not long ago at all, that this woman would never have been able to use a deformity, in this case a hump, as an object of sexual desire, much less sing about it in a song. Remember Quasimodo? In Victor Hugo's classic novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Quasimodo was ridiculed, ostracized and ultimately banned from a life among "normal people." His crime was being born with a hump! Were Quasimodo alive today, I dare say he would have been banging more than bells in the bell tower.

Can you visualize this? This isn't a "poor woman with a hump," as any of us would have thought before the Black Eyed Peas enlightened us. This is a "sexy woman with a hump," more akin to Marty Feldman in Young Frankenstein or Buffalo Hump in Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove tetralogy than anything close to Quasimodo.

Yes, we need to acknowledge and improve a great many inequalities in this country. But we also need to celebrate our victories, and My Humps is one of them.
