Greenvenience

I'm typically not a jargon or buzzword guy. Matter of fact, I typically go out of my way to not use them at all. But something about this word I really like.

Greenvenience.

It perfectly describes the parameters people put on their willingness to act in a "green" manner.

Recycling has become, at least in larger cities, incredibly convenient. Here in Denver we have big purple trash cans on wheels. We put all our recyclables in that big, wheel it out to the curb with the trash every other week, and the city picks it up. No sorting whatsoever. Due to the incredibly high level of greenvenience, recycling has gone up 40% in our city since they initiated the big purple bins.

For the majority of Americans, that's the level of greenvenience they need to make it worth their while. The more involved I have to get, the more it's going to slow me down, the less likely I am to do it.

So how about you? What's your greenvenient threshhold?

Are you like Asbestos Dust, who dumps the old motor oil from his 1972 Ford 3/4-ton into the wetlands behind his house? Or are you like Venessa, who uses Aster leaves for toilet paper?

Do you use paper towels, or do you clean with sponges and rags?

Do you recycle every single thing you can, including all forms of paper, or do you sometimes throw things in the trash because it's just easier?

Do you buy milk and juice and other beverages in recyclable containers only, or do you buy them in non-recyclable wax-coated paper cartons, maybe because of price or maybe because of brand preference?

Do you carpool?

Do you drive to lunch?

Do you use compact fluorescent bulbs at home, or do you prefer regular bulbs because you don't like the color that comes from compact fluorescent?

Do you make sure bottles and cans always get put in recycling, or do you toss them in the trash if that's what's closest and easiest?

What else?

In the spirit of full disclosure, I've done every single one of the "non-green" things listed above. Well, except the oil thing.

I had a 1984 Ford Bronco.

Bumper Sticker Bitchin'

I'm not much of a bumper sticker guy. That's mostly because the vast majority of bumper stickers either fall into the "Who cares?", the "That's stupid" or the "That type's way too small for me to read while I'm driving" camp. On the rare occasion that I see a clever bumper sticker, I think, that's clever. Then I go back to paying attention to the road, because the "I was reading a bumper sticker" defense doesn't work with the poh-lice.

Yesterday, while driving home from work, I saw one on the back of a car that made me think.

"FUCK WAR"

No, it didn't make me think about war, or about my stance on war, or about whether I wanted to fuck war or not.

It made me think about how I felt seeing that on the back of a car. Whether I thought it was an appropriate place for something with the word "FUCK" so prominently displayed. I spent the rest of my drive in a battle with myself.

The parent me thought, I appreciate the sentiment, but I'd really rather you showed some class and considered the amount of children who will see that on a daily basis. George Bush isn't going to see it. Sure, some of the pro-war crowd will see it, and look into your Jetta and see you, edgy 20-something girl with a cigarette, and think, fuck you, slacker, and then continue to be pro-war. But a lot of kids are going to see it, too. Little kids. So show some class.

The rebellious me, however, thought, if that's the way you feel, tell everyone. Seeing the word "fuck" isn't going to traumatize a child. It might actually spark a conversation between parent and child. A healthy conversation about language and freedom of speech and individuality.

I'm still being pulled in both directions.

How do you feel about it?

Talking out loud.

More and more, my inner monologue keeps slipping out.

Why? Why, as I approach 40, am now I saying out loud what I think I'm thinking?

It seems like it's always mid-sentence, too. I'll be driving to work, running through my morning to-do list in my head, and somewhere in the middle I'll start speaking.

"...time sheets in or they'll have my ass."

The scariest thing is, I don't realize I'm doing it until I've done it. I'll finish the thought out loud, and then think, wait a second, did I just say that out loud? It's not just when I'm alone, either. I'll catch myself doing it at work or in a store or out for a walk. What I haven't started, knock on wood, is doing it when someone I know is right there with me. But I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

What things are you finding yourself doing now that you didn't used to do when you were younger?

Why don't you eat breakfast?

You know you should. Every doctor, every nutritionist, every teacher and every parent have told you it's the most important meal of the day. You know it's the most important meal of the day. Yet you still don't eat it, do you?

Why?

$370,000,000

That's how much two people got to split between them for winning the Mega Millions jackpot.

That's three hundred seventy MILLION dollars.

$185,000,000 a piece.

After Uncle Sam takes a big bite, each will get around $75 million.

Seventy-five MILLION dollars. In the bank. Right now. Ready to spend.

Buy whatever you want. Buy two of them.

And if, by chance, you happen to have enough sense to hire someone to manage your money for you (someone good and reputable), you'll be able to turn that money into...

More money.

Or you could spend it all in a year.

What would you do?

Guilty pleasure.

Looney's been doing Guilty Pleasure of the Week posts, which made me think about a TV show I am completely and utterly addicted to:

Battlestar Galactica

I loved the original when it aired in 1978, so when I heard they'd "updated" it I was so skeptical I didn't watch. But on the recommendation of a trusted friend I rented the miniseries that aired on SciFi a couple years ago, and immediately got a hold of every episode since. I'm now all caught up -- they're about 10 episodes or so into season three -- and I'm totally hooked. It's really good! It has some star power with Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell, who are both great, but the "unknowns" also do a great job of portraying characters with depth -- something you don't typically expect from sci fi.

Anyone else out there willing to admit you watch it?

When You Were Yoots

Joe and I were having a discussion over at Paula's about the influence of parents on their kids, and it got me to thinking (as discussions with Joe always do, which is why I love having discussions with Joe) about whether I was right or not, which in turn made me curious to see how all y'all felt.

So here's the question: When you were a teenager, particularly in your high-school years, who had more influence on you as it pertained to your appearance? Your three choices are 1) Your parents; 2) Your friends/peers; 3) Celebrities/idols. Just name your number one choice, or order them if you wish. Tell me why.

I'm not talking about choices having to do with sex or drinking or cheating or driving like and idiot or things like that. I'm just talking about the more superficial choices having to do with how you looked.

Do tell!

Battling road rage.

On November 8, 2005, a man named Jason Reynolds was involved in a high-speed auto accident that left two people -- in two separate vehicles -- dead on the highway and Reynolds arrested for causing the crash because of aggressive driving. Of course he claims one of the other drivers, Kelvin Norman, caused the crash, and even told the tow truck driver that Norman "got what he deserved."

Yesterday a jury found Reynolds, who has a documented history of aggressive driving, guilty of murder. And the key was that he was guilty of First-degree Murder, which means life without chance of parole.

This is the first time a Colorado jury has come back with a first-degree murder verdict in a road rage case. Needless to say, prosecutors across the country are paying close attention, because they rarely go for the first-degree charge, opting instead for manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges.

First of all, I am overjoyed that this scumbag is gone for life. He'll never be in a position to endanger someone's life on the road again, and that's a wonderful thing.

But here's my question: Was this first-degree murder?

Try, if you can, to remove yourself from what you believe the punishment should be, because I think most of us would agree that he got the punishment he deserved.

My understanding, however, is that to be considered murder in the first degree, there has to be premeditation. In other words, you have to go out with the express intent of killing someone.

While Reynolds may have been in a position where he should have known that his actions could have resulted in killing someone, I don't know that he intended to kill. Isn't this third-degree murder -- involuntary manslaughter?

Again, I think the guy deserved the sentence he got, and I know he wouldn't have gotten that sentence if he'd been charged with involuntary manslaughter. And not having heard the trial, the prosecution obviously made the case for there being premeditation. But man, it just seems like a bit of a slippery slope to me.

Thoughts? I'm particularly interested in hearing from Archer, Law Wench and Stan (PJ, could you email Stan and see if he'd be willing to weigh in on this one?).

Academy Award Nominations

I love it when the nominations come out. First a friend of mine does an Oscar pool which is always good fun. It's not so much good fun because of the picks, it's good fun because everyone always lists why they chose the way they did. Given that a large percentage of the participants (around 50 people or so) are comedians, the responses are always a treat. The winner of the pool gets a whole bunch of homemade chocolate chip cookies. The only bummer of the whole thing is that Jon doesn't actually release the results of the pool until the day of the next year's Oscar nominees are announced.

I found out today that I came in tied for second with 16 correct answers. The winner got 18. So close! I did very well, though. Some of my incredibly witty answers were:

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” Because C.S. Lewis was a Christian.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
“Memoirs of a Geisha” Because a Chinese chick playing a Japanese chick could only be the result of good costume design.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
“March of the Penguins” Tie: Because everyone is sick of political documentaries, and because penguins wear little tuxedos.

BEST ART DIRECTION
“Memoirs of a Geisha”. Because a Chinese chick playing a Japanese chick could only be the result of good art direction.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
“Tsotsi” Because it sounds the most foreign.

BEST ACTOR
Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Capote”. Because gay authors are harder to play than gay cowboys.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
“Brokeback Mountain”. Because gay cowboy love is beautiful at 16:9.

BEST ACTRESS
Reese Witherspoon in “Walk the Line”. Because she didn’t shoot herself after Legally Blonde II.

BEST DIRECTOR
"Brokeback Mountain” Ang Lee. Because when I think gay Wyoming cowboy, I think Chinese.

Anyway...

Gearing up for this year's Oscar pool, may have a quick aside, my dears?

Am I the only one who thought "Little Miss Sunshine" was just pretty good? I know so many people who absolutely loved this movie, saying it's one of their all-time favorites. Then it gets nominated for best picture of the year.

And I thought it was... good. It was well acted, and had some very fun and charming moments. But -- and I credit my wife for describing the plot this way -- it was a typical indie-hit formula: dysfunctional family forced to deal with each other in close quarters. Everyone in that van was fucked up, with the mom being the only one remotely close to "normal" but still being a stereotype. It made me not care much about any of the characters. I thought the interesting story -- non-beauty queen little girl goes to beauty contest -- was completely overshadowed by drug-addict grandpa, suicidal gay uncle, angst-filled mute brother, success-driven type-A dad, and trying-to-hold-it-all-together mom.

All that said, I thought the ending was fucking beautiful and made me like the movie more than I really did.

But best picture? I don't think so.

Unfortunately, I've seen none of the other nominees, so I need to remedy that before I render an opinion.

Yours?

13 Words -- The Results

First of all, if you haven't done the 13 Word associations in the post below this one, stop reading this and go do it.

Now.

Okay. Paula does these Sunday Mutters posts every, um, Sunday, which are free association things, so that's kind of where I got the idea for this. But it was also a post that PJ had up the other day about the word "bitch" that got me thinking about words and how popular culture can adapt, revise, or completely change their meanings.

All of the words I picked have popular meanings or associations that have little to nothing to do with their actual dictionary definition (though for some of them, the pop meaning has become so common it's now in the dictionary as a slang definition). Here's how the responses broke down. I'll put the word, the association/definition, and number of people who wrote something related to that:

UPDATED AS OF 4 P.M. MST ON 1/12/07

WAFFLE
Something you eat for breakfast - 11
Personality trait regarding decision making or taking a side - 2

DUDE
Having to do with a ranch - 6 (Keera put Yankee Doodle, which is actually the closest to the real meaning of a city slicker vacationing out West)
Slang term used for anyone, anything, anywhere - 6
Sub - 1 (Um, Nat?)

GAY
Homosexual - 11
Happy & Fun - 2 (JennyJinx put Gay Paree, which could be argued belongs in the "homosexual" camp today, but since its origins were at the turn of the 19th/20th century, I'm calling it happy & fun; Joe's "Gay 90s" was referring, so he says, to the Gay 1890s, though there's this club in Minnesota...)

GRILL
Having to do with cooking - 11
Having to do with a car - 1
Having to do with teeth - 1

RACK
Having to do with food - 4
Having to do with breastssss - 4
Having to do with storage - 3 (I included Joe's "Rack 'em up" in here, as you're putting the balls in a rack)
Having to do with torture - 1 (um, SuperSnark?)
Having to do with nothing that has to do with rack - 1 (that would be JennyJinx)

CRIB
Having to do wiith a baby - 5
Place where someone lives - 3
Having to do with cheating - 4
LucyP did not associate "crib" with anything

ANAL
Having to do with sex - 5
Having to do with aliens - 3
Personality trait - 3
Having to do with a dog's sac - 1 (um, Jen?)
Having to do with itching - 1 (um, Keera?)

CHOICE
Having to do with abortion - 6
More generic synonym for "option" - 6
Having to do with coffee - 1

WEB
Having to do with spiders - 2
World Wide - 9 (I assumed the answers "junk" and "fun" were referring to this meaning)
Having to do with lying - 2

BAKE
Having to do with food - 12
Having to do with weed - 1 (I'm assuming that's what SuperSnark meant when she put "burn," although, that could also apply to food, eh?)

PIG
The barnyard animal - 11
An insult - 1 (paired with "fucker")
Slob - 1

HOE
Garden tool - 7
Redneck Dance Party - 4
Derogatory term for a woman - 2 (I'm assuming Crystal Dakin is an acquaintance, Erin?)

COCK
Rooster - 7
Penis - 4
Derogatory term for a man - 1
Depends on the origin - 1 (Looney's "cock and bull" -- the origin is debated here, and depending on which one you choose, you could be referring to a rooster)

(said in best Freudian accent) Verrrrry interestink. I screwed up with "bake" and should have put "baked" because I bet there would have been more in the weed camp. And I'm surprised no one put anything to do with cops under "pig."

Thoughts, profound or funny or otherwise?

Best bullshit in town.

I was just walking over to Whole Paycheck to grab a sandwich for lunch and saw a sign for a place around here that claimed they had the best chips and salsa in town. The claim was backed up, too: they actually were voted Best Chips and Salsa in Town in the annual Best of Denver competition that Westword Magazine puts on every year.

Best chips and salsa?

Um...

Who cares?

Are you really going to choose a restaurant based on their chips and salsa? Don't get me wrong, I love chips and salsa. It's one of those things that, as long as it's in front of me, I'll just keep on eating. But it's munchies, you know? Appetizer. If you have a menu full of food, and the only thing you can claim is that you have the best chips and salsa in town, then that means the highlight of your meal is over before you get your entree. Talk about disappointing.

The whole Best of Denver thing is pretty annoying. While there are definitely categories worth paying attention to -- Best Hangover Breakfast, Best Burrito, Best Sushi, Best Non-surgical Facelift -- there are some really, really stupid ones.

  • Best Late-night Haircut: If you're going to get your hair cut at 2 a.m., you're drunk, and if you're drunk, you're going to regret that haircut.

  • Best Doggy Dress-up: If you dress your doggy up, you should go to prison.

  • Best Show About Andy Warhol: How the hell many were there? I coun't one.

  • Best Artist at Pissing Off the Right Wing: That's like saying "Best Star in the Galaxy at Being Hot." Every artist pisses off the right wing!

  • Best Guy Who Spends 40 Hours a Week at Band Practice: Get better, dude, then you won't have to practice so much.

Many, many more. I know I'm being crabby, but I guess I'm getting sick of all the best this and best that that's besieged society. At least with these Westword ones they've been voted on by someone, so there's a tiny bit of substance to them. Most businesses nowadays will just make whatever claim they feel like. How many restaurants use the terms "Fine Food" or "Gourmet" now? Not just restaurants, but products in a grocery store too. Nothing is fine or gourmet anymore. Nothing is truly the best or number one. Nothing is prime or choice or grade A or recommended. Because everything is.

Do you pay attention to claims?
