Talking out loud.

More and more, my inner monologue keeps slipping out.

Why? Why, as I approach 40, am now I saying out loud what I think I'm thinking?

It seems like it's always mid-sentence, too. I'll be driving to work, running through my morning to-do list in my head, and somewhere in the middle I'll start speaking.

"...time sheets in or they'll have my ass."

The scariest thing is, I don't realize I'm doing it until I've done it. I'll finish the thought out loud, and then think, wait a second, did I just say that out loud? It's not just when I'm alone, either. I'll catch myself doing it at work or in a store or out for a walk. What I haven't started, knock on wood, is doing it when someone I know is right there with me. But I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

What things are you finding yourself doing now that you didn't used to do when you were younger?

I always talked to myself somewhat. What I never did before recently is that "uuunnnnggghh" sound I now make when getting up from a kneeling, or sitting on the floor, position. It's pretty much the same noise my dad used to make.

Moisturizing.

I've always talked out loud, so that one doesn't count. It's only amplified now when I hear my little girl walking around the house muttering "fucking lady, learn to drive."

I would say something - but as I approach 50, I can't even remember what I used to do when I was younger...

Getting older, mostly. I did less of that when I was younger.

I find myself blaming stupid things I do on getting older. Used to have better excuses.

Having to use a magnifying mirror to put on my makeup. I hate the sonovabitch but it really helps with even application.

Staying sober. And staying in. (I think the two are connected, somehow.)

Listening to music that doesnt have a screaming frontman, a whanggggging lead guitar and a frantic drummer about to burst his snare.

Yup, I do that crap all the time...

So *how* close to 40 are you?

[hoping he's closer than me...]

Ha! That's funny. I was just talking to TheMan last night and he said something in the middle of our conversation that was so off-topic that I had to laugh. He swore we were just talking about that and I said "No, you were thinking to yourself and forgot that I wasn't part of that conversation." Very funny.

Anyway, I find myself telling Lil' Miss to turn down the music a lot. It's funny that I could jam to Metallica when I was younger, but now that crap gives me a headache. :)

I've always talked to myself too - and sometimes to imaginary people - so that's no big deal. But lately I've been forgetting things (I used to have a PERFECT memory) and even ~gasp~ losing things! I mix up hubby and boss's names, which can be a bit embarrassing. I'd rather allocate calories to a cookie than a glass of wine. And, worst of all, I've quit sleeping like a rock through the night.

I talk to people sometimes as if they were Usenet posters. "Well, that's probably the smartest thing anyone's ever said," sort of thing. Sarcastic and acerbic. People just don't know how to react. It's like they don't believe it. And you act as if there's nothing at all odd, and I guess they think probably it never happened. It's really bad. How many times am I going to get away with calling the lady in the flower-shop a dickwad? The only thing that's saved me from being murdered is they're mostly foreigners.
