Why the hell is "knee" spelled with a "k" but "neck" is not?

I don't know, it's just knot.

The silent K is what we get for standardizing the spelling of a Germanic language just before we stopped pronouncing it. Imagine what "I caught a knight coughing up in a trough" sounded like before dictionaries.

Took me years to get the line in Monty P's Holy Grail, "You silly, English K-nigit".

I just tell people that my name is spelled "K-J-A-N-E" and that the K is silent.

You have a knack for getting your knickers in a knot about the silliest kthings...

This reminds me, for no reason at all of the PG Wodehouse novel "Leave it to Psmith," in which, of course, the "P" in the character's name is silent, but people don't realize that, and continually address him as "Peasmith." Of course that should get old very quickly, but for some reason it doesn't.
