I remember seeing the collapsed Nimitz Freeway in '89 and literally having nightmares at the thought of being crushed like that. This is just as horrible. I'm looking at it on Google Earth now, which shows the bridge "before". Gives the "after" on CNN a lot more magnitude.

I just saw a report that said Minnesota officials had been warned as far back as 1990 that the bridge was structurally unsound. It was built in an unusual way, without any pylons or supports that would be in the way of barges traveling the river. I'm thinking maybe that wasn't the best strategy.
Jeff, do you recall the family killed when a girder swung from an overpass over I-25? Was that due to a construction or infrastructure failure and was anyone held accountable?
A street in Manhattan blew up a few weeks back, caused by a steam pipe placed in the 1920's. Can we correct and rebuild America’s bones?

I have a co-worker with a co-worker who's not been heard from. She said you can't really understand the scope from the pics on TV. It's just massive.

It is like the end of the world is coming. Your life flashes through your eyes when you realize you may die, in a river, with no hope.

Probably not to any great extent. So much of it was done under the WPA that it would be cost prohibitive today to rebuild and repair all of it.
